Speech Pathology Care Issues for the Patient with Respiratory Complications

Chad Barefoot earned his M.S.N. (Adult Critical Care Nurse Practitioner) and post graduate certifications in nursing administration from the University of Pennsylvania.  As an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, his responsibilities include patient care management, including ordering and interpreting lab data, chest X-rays, diagnosis, mechanical ventilation, etc.; other medical and nursing procedures; patient, family, resident and nursing  education, and consultation with MDs.

This session will provide the speech-language pathologist with important information about pulmonary issues to assist in providing the best dysphagia care.

Objectives:  At the conclusion of the session, participants will:

  1. Describe the functions of the lungs.
  2. Describe 5 diseases/conditions of the lungs and the implications for the SLP
  3. Define 5 terms related to the interpretation of chest x-rays and describing lung sounds.
  4. Describe the purposes of artificial airways and airway management techniques.

Agenda:

4:00-4:30  Lung anatomy, function, and diseases.

4:30-4:45  CXRs and lung sounds

4:45-5:15  Artificial airways, ventilation, and managment

5:15-5:40  Chest tubes and pulmonary toilet

5:40-6:00  Questions and Answers

Registration:  On-site only.  $10.00 professionals; $5.00 students.

Directions:

Abington Memorial Hospital: Frobese Conference Center, Classrooms 1 & 2.  Attendees should park in the Zipley Garage and enter on Ground Floor.

Lehigh Valley Hospital:  CC & I-78: Attendees should park in the parking garage upon entering the campus of LVH and take the shuttle bus to the main entrance.  Anderson Pavilion is to the right.
