The Role of Gesture in Communication
and Learning: What the SLP Should Know
Presented by Karla McGregor, PhD
Wednesday, March 28, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
When people talk, they gesture with their hands. In adults, gesture and speech are integrated systems—they are produced at the same time and they symbolize the same meanings. Children learn to communicate via gesture before they communicate with words. Moreover, children whose parents gesture a lot while talking have faster rates of vocabulary growth than children whose parents gesture less. Such associations between gesture, speech and language are characteristic of children with language impairments as well. During this seminar, speech-language pathologists will learn how to exploit gesture during assessment, prognosis and intervention for pediatric populations.
