Nancy Carlino is an assistant professor in the Communication Disorders Department at California University of Pennsylvania. She has 24 years of clinical experience primarily in acute care and rehabilitation settings with adults with neurogenic communication disorders and dysphagia. Recent clinical research has focused on the changing cultural influences in this population and the need to acknowledge cultural differences when making clinical decisions. |
Ethnic minorities currently compose approximately one-third of the population of the United States. As our society becomes increasingly multicultural, the speech-language pathologist is faced with new challenges related to the influences of various cultures on health care decision-making. Racial, cultural, and ethnic factors strongly influence patients’ reactions to serious illness and decision about end-of-life care. This webinar will present differences among major racial, cultural, and ethnic groups and will provide general guidelines for optimizing communicative interactions with patients and families.
After completing this course, participants will be able to give examples of the influence of culture on end-of-life decision-making, describe the role of the SLP in end-of-life situations and describe how awareness of cultural issues can be incorporated into interactions with patients and families.
Webinar fee is:

$50 - Non-Members
